Throw the dice
Shall I throw the seven ?
Just pick em up
What about the craps
O K bet the craps
Just throw the dice
I'll try and throw eleven
Be happy with a six
Heck I threw a craps
I told you bet the craps
Now I threw a seven
So you lost the dice
What about the money
Forget the money you didn't win
I want to try again
Forget it lets get a coffee

In the moment

I was sitting by the river looking across at the Detroit skyline and having a moment.
We learn in recovery that living in the moment is part of the process.I sat for 45 minutes
and then wrote as follows .

Well , just watch the boat .

” Watch the boat”?

Yes watch the boat !
What  just watch the boat ?

Well, not just the boat; the river too .
Ok ,the river too .
Where's the boat?
What about the crane .?
There is no boat .
So , just watch the crane !!!
Here’s a boat .Look there’s some people .
No, they are just the guards
Yes but guards are people .
But the boat is gone .
Just watch the river!!!
I’ll watch the river and the buildings too .
What about the crane.
I like the crane but here’s a boat.
I 'll just watch the boat .

Then I sketched a picture of the crane which I have not been able to scan yet .do it later

Bob C
some scribble
this is actually one picture but failed to connect the two halves after scanning .A view from Jen's living room.

When I started drawing I just intended to draw  a street scene and considered it kind of tedious to include the drapes,  awning ,window frame and all the stuff inside the living room especially the pieces of paper strewn on the table but then I really started to enjoy myself and the street became almost secondary to my original theme. It is amazing because I had no real plan and it kind of all came together .The two frames on the table
are photos of Lillian my Mother and Connie ,my wife
.So this is for you girls

good girl

drawing

This is something I wrote a long time ago .In my opinion it is somewhat contrived and immature and certainly not literary . Since it has been 25 years since I wrote this I still feel that it expresses some truth about myself and when I read it to my friends they seem to relate or laugh .Some of my stuff comes out well when read aloud with some emotion .

 GOLD OR DUST

I fell upon a heap of gold
Being old I had no need of gold
To late my limbs were weak and body cold .

I fell upon a heap of dames,
and lived a life of fun and games .
To some it seemed a life of bliss .
Naught to me  but one long kiss .

I fell upon a heap of friends .
A happy time just holding hands .
I soon got blisters on my palm,
And hid a wish to someone harm

I fell upon a heap of plenty,
It was always full and never empty.
I drank it up like a gulping fish .
I never dreamed nor something wish

I fell upon a heap of dust ,
From this I grew as something must .
I saw myself in many things ,
Twas me twas dust to all it clings .

(yuk  it sounds corny to me now but it relates to things that have happened since I wrote it )

Second thoughts

Second thoughts let's dispense with the confessions and kind of stay more in the moment as when I wake up from a little snooze at the library and through half closed eyes spy this very attractive girl wandering around the shelves looking for a book and and ending up standing right in my line of sight at an Internet terminal , enabling me to stare right at her without attracting too much attention .
Dark hair tied up carelessly with a few loose curls falling onto a slender neck supported by straight shoulders bearing the thin straps of a short black dress decorated with layers of tassels over black tights ending at her knees .In my semi dream state I toy around with the idea of walking over to the terminal next to her and conjure up a few introductory scenarios in my head .I continue to stare and from her confident demeanour and air of self possession talk myself out of carrying out my my momentary fantasy , after all I am her Senior by 30 plus years , so I let her shimmer out of the library alone .

My shadow ,or elements of my character not readily apparent ............whoa are you really going to reveal some dark secret ? Never mind more about this later and thus follows an operatic cackle of laughter .

Bob buying new cell phone after dropping one in paint and also cat Murphy at his place
Good fortune reigned for uncle John and younger uncle Charles , with Daddy Bob of little Henry boy and Daisy sister , when humdrum school was canceled for the snow and thus arose a chance to play the family way dragging sleds up and down the hill , while Daddy Bob showed off his snow board skill , but really to watch and care for Henry boy and Daisy sister together on the sled hurtling toward a barbed fence but at the last gently stopping short.

When Henry boy complained , " I can hardly make but one more run because my little toes I cannot feel , so Uncle Charles slipped off young Henry's welly boots and rubbed his chilly toes , then sent him sledging one more time with Daisy sister holding tight.

So when the day was done and heading home through deep snow fields and snow ball salvos they reached the short cut home by the church and Uncle John and younger Uncle Charles had surely sewn themselves into the children's memory, forever connected.

Sylvia's garden

Let's take a walk in Sylvia's garden for a moment and follow the path through arches of vines and flowers entering a landscape arranged with scattered groups of once discarded stones, now reclaimed and placed in whimsical patterns amongst an array of trees and shrubs.

Throughout our walk we can share in Sylvia's world and experience for a while living in the moment, moment to moment without regret or expectation .

From the garden we enter the house where the past has been brought to the present and our eyes are bombarded with Sylvia's carefully ordered collections of books, paintings, family photos and heirlooms. Slumping gently into soft furniture we feel the atmosphere of creativity as a crackling fireplace warms our cheeks .

Many words come to mind as we connect with our mood, preserve , reclaim , create,
care and share and our thoughts culminate in the realization of love , meaning , and
purpose

Henry's house

Brother Henry rules his roost and why not he has run a mini empire consisting of a pub and hotel for forty years and it came so naturally to him when he assigned me the task of chopping kindling wood for the numerous fireplaces around the hotel and bars which depended on wood heat for warmth .He handed out such orders without a hint that there would be any dissent and in fact he would leave rather quickly in order to lessen the chance for any objection .It was just like the old days except now I was 62 and and Henry was 71 but still I felt like the kid brother of long ago when I was 12 and he was 21 .So I dutifully headed off for the wood shed and started chopping sticks from a pile of carpenters waste and then my other brother John showed up and proceeded to load a wheel barrow with logs of compressed saw dust which was the prime burning fuel for the fireplaces .John is the eldest but does not want to admit it and thus attacks any physical task with a kind of gusto that belies his age of 72 .Meanwhile I finished the kindling and helped John fill up another barrow with logs but before I could lift the barrow myself John muscled in front of me and took off toward the house which was Henry's residence close by the pub.Not knowing what to do next I followed John up the path to Yew Tree Cottage and then John noticed that I was behind him and dropping the barrow he turned to me and angrily shouted 'where the hell are you going'. I was completely taken aback and could not muster a reply and feeling even more like a child I turned back towards the pub wondering what was wrong .

WALK IT OFF

WALK IT OFF

That was the fattest pigeon that I saw a flapping in the trees

hiding from a hovering hawk lifted by a gentle breeze .

In the paddock near I heard a donkey bray,

standing lonely amongst the hay.

Ten times around the garden now I've been

and still that was the fattest pigeon that I've seen
Daddy

Back from sixty I'm nine

Daddy's at the back door coughing that cough,

you know,

stopped short by wince of stretched stitches on a scar from recent repair

with my nine eyes I look up at him and ask my whys

tap tap tap on the pack face of a salty sailor

he answers while stained thumb and finger lifts to light a smoke muffling reply

wisping words spell 'I can't quit'

he spits untipped bits and takes another drag.

Just received my hold back from a job finished 5 months ago and now it feels like found money because I'd almost given up on it . Persistent collection efforts paid off for a change .Wow just interrupted by a call from a builder responding to my internet ad on kiji , first response ever .Things are looking up . Work is slow in Windsor because of the uncertainty around the auto industry .

alberta bound?

Work situation in Windsor is tight but we've managed to stay busy with renovation jobs but have only done one new house in the last month .Renovations are hard to price because we often run into unexpected costs after stripping down walls and plaster. We have almost completed the refitting of the second floor of a house and expect to meet our completion schedule of one week .

I have 'nt posted because I've simply been too tired since starting this condo job .This job has been different in respect that instead of working alone in some new house on an empty street I get to meet others in my trade who are working in the same building . I get to share with others the trials and tribulations of the drywaller who is often considered the trash of the trades mainly because we are very independent contractors who don't have to write a qualifying ticket , our qualification is our work . I made friends with G a drywall taper like myself and we have shared together about our lives in construction . G is fussy about his work it's the best I've seen , something to be admired .
We have shared some personal stuff because somehow we developed a trust between us and so now we have a kind of alliance with respect to survival in the job environment . As individual independent sub contractors we are kind of in competition with each other and and there can be a measure of distrust between us . Basically we want all the work for ourselves and don't want to share and this is especially true when work is in short supply .The builders like this because we don't present solidarity when it comes to negotiating prices for our work . G and I exchange information and try to watch out for ourselves trying to get the best paying easiest work .

I' ve been busy at the condo and not much time for blogging .Finally the heat is on and working conditions have improved immensely . Great view across the the river to Detroit from the 11th floor and I never realized the amount of ships traveling up river .Photos coming soon .

I'm working on a 17 story condominium apartment building where theft of materials and tools has become a major problem .The owner called a meeting of all subcontractors and raised the hold back on payables from 10 to 20% with an abusive threat that if we objected we could leave immediately . About 70 attended the meeting , so on a rough calculation the builder is now holding back $14000.00 on a weekly basis . A hold back is designed to protect the builder from poor quality work and non performance of contractual obligations and the builder is now using it as a collective punishment for the wrongs of individuals .If I leave the job , I risk losing the value of work in progress plus any hold back that I have coming to me . I'm staying because there's not much work at the moment and I need whatever money that comes in . I'm trying not to be angry or resentful about this because my attitude at work will suffer and I'll probably get fired anyway .

Child hood memory

A daylight domain of tangled bush and canopy of tree tops through which the high sun of summer filtered through to the mound of fresh dug red loam where a small freckled skinned child busily amused himself by digging and shaping the sandy soil into an impenetrable fortress. The soil was easily shaped because the badgers and foxes who inhabited this overgrown temperate jungle frequently seemed to be improving upon their extensive network of holes and burrows. Charles liked the feel of the fresh dug soil as he scooped it into piles with both hands to build the walls of his castle and unlike pure sand it was not so abrasive as he dug into it with his fingernails in order to clear a tunnel under the castle wall.
A lone Sentry stood guard atop the newly constructed watch tower. The soldier had been obtained from the bottom of a cereal package after breakfast that morning . He had done it while mother was washing up because he had to empty the contents into a large mixing bowl in order to find the pesky prize. The toy was made of plastic and its legs were attached to a platform which Charles promptly cut off with his scout knife. After all how could a soldier do anything constructive while his legs were attached to a flat piece of plastic? With his legs firmly embedded in the sandy soil the soldier looked so much more genuine on guard at the watch tower .

Charles continued to dig , scrape , and shape the red earth , steadily improving upon his fortification. The toy soldier viewed Charles' kingdom from a perfectly defensible vantage
point .
They were on a ledge, on the side of a steep slope, which had been formed by the excavations of badgers and foxes. These lairs were what first attracted Charles to this place and he called it the " Fox Holes ".
The Foxholes were actually in a large pit situated at the intersection of three fields and bordered by almost impenetrable bramble bushes and elderberry overshadowed by aged elm , oak , and sycamore trees. Surrounded by well tilled barley fields and lush grassland the pit had been left to nature, wild, unspoiled, and mysterious enough to attract the attention of a small boy on a day's exploration. From his first discovery Charles claimed this small territory for himself and returned here many times throughout his childhood .

It was a perfect place. On a summers day the the trees filtered the hot suns rays and provided gentle warmth and light. On a cold windy day the air remained calm , Charles could only hear the wind bending the tops of trees which bordered the pit. It was a wild place but not inhospitable, with Charles' activities accompanied by chattering sparrows , and the song of robin, thrush, and nightingale , with the occasional rustling and scratching of small animals in the undergrowth. His exploration was aided by small well trodden paths made by animals criss crossing this overgrown excavation. The bottom was "'fairly flat and close to the centre , the lack of direct sunlight had impeded growth to create a small clearing under the trees. On cold rainy days in spring or fall Charles would build a campfire in the clearing. At first , his attempts at fire making were frustrated by damp wood and lack of experience. However , through trial and error he became an expert at putting together the right combination of dry grass , small twigs and kindling sticks to create a blazing fire with just one strike of a match. It was a natural progression for him to obtain an old cooking pot and cast iron fry pan with which he cooked meals of sausages and baked beans and boiled water for steaming hot cups of tea. Charles could even enjoy that damp English weather while treating himself to such delicious feasts and warming himself by the crackling and spitting fireplace. On days when there were no delicacies to steal from his mother's pantry Charles would go to the potatoe field nearby and take a few potatoes to bake in the open fire. As he became older he played less in the sandy red soil and the fireplace became more the centre of attraction. He gathered together pieces of sandstone which outcropped all over the pit and made a proper circle of stones for his fireplace. Then he made a tripod of sticks from which he could hang his cooking pots . These ideas were picked up from books that he read at home and school. One particularly ambitious project was his attempt to make charcoal. The idea came from a book which described how charcoal burners lived in the Woods of Northern England during the 18th Century and earned their keep by making charcoal. The principal was fairly simple and consisted of piling thin sticks on top of a well stoked fire and then layering sods of damp earth on top to slow down the burning process. Almost all the air had to be excluded from the fire except for a small hole at the bottom of the pile of sod and an outlet hole at the top. The cracks between the squares of sod had to be filled with mud so that oxygen was excluded from the fire. The mound had to be constantly tended to make sure that the fire did not burn too fast. After eight hours of slow burning removal of the sods revealed a small pile of brittle charcoal sticks. Fortunately for Charles there was a small swampy pond nearby where he could obtain the necessary materials for damping down the charcoal burn . On another occasion he made a bow and used the fire to harden and strengthen the points of his arrows. Most of his entertainment was gained from manufacturing these things rather than using them for their purpose.

These trips to the foxholes were not an everyday occurrence for Charles because he was at boarding school during the week and only came home on weekends. Sometimes months would elapse between his visits but this would serve to make his place all the more special to him. As the child grew so did the foxholes change with the time and seasons. Each visit became a new discovery, a new hole and fresh digging , a tree had died and fallen , a young sapling was shooting up beside it. In summer wild strawberries and blackberries could be picked and taken home for pies or , more often , mostly eaten on the way home.
One great attraction for him was the hope of one day seeing a fox or badger out of it's lair. The evidence of their presence was easy to find. In winter tracks in the snow, and in summer paw prints and claw marks in the soft earth and here and there piles of fluff , feathers and thin bones where a bird or rabbit had been caught and eaten. Many times he had stared into the thick undergrowth trying to see where the noises came from but without success. Yes , he did see the occasional rabbit or hare scurry across the clearing but he never spied a fox or badger. Sometimes he wondered to himself why he ever called his place the "Fox Holes ". Then again why would he see anything when so engrossed in tending his fire and building fortresses right next to the badgers den. Sometimes, when engrossed in his activities a particularly loud noise would freeze him in his place and the excitement would send a shiver down his spine.

new job

Working on a condominium high rise this week . No elevator yet , and have to carry our tools up to the eleventh floor , a good way to get in shape . There is a fabulous view of the Detroit sky line and these apartments are selling for $500,000 and up . Today , the heat finally got turned on which makes it a lot more comfortable for working . The general contractor is a bit of a hard ass . why? Because the supply of work is slowing and he can drive a hard bargain .Oh by the way , I figured out some of my posting problems by using Firefox for this blog , now it works much better .

HARD TO IGNORE

Living in Windsor Ontario , it's hard to ignore the news from across the river in Detroit because even without cable we pick up all the major tv stations and we have an abundant choice in radio broadcasts . Just lately the campaign for Michigan Governor has become a childish series of negative ads from from both sides stating their respective dishonesty and incompetence . I have yet to hear a concrete policy statement from either DeVoss or Granholm and the campaign for the Senate is much the same .Perhaps the real enemy of the people is discord amongst self serving politicians .

I lost the menu at the top of my browser for a couple of days , where did it go
I dunno . Anyway , I found it kind of by accident while I was doing something else .
.
You see , I updated explorer to 7th edition and can't be bothered to read all the info. on it and so I keep clicking by trial and error till something works .I've been reading up on HTML a bit because I now understand it may be helpful when writing my blog but It's kind of distracting me from the actual task of doing my blog .

In 1993 I built a deck for a fellow who owned a computer store and in return he gave me a new 486 p.c. .I set about bringing myself up to speed on my computer and used it for my business and a dial up internet connection .Advances in technology made my pc obsolete after a few years and I never bothered to replace it until a few months ago. So , now I'm learning all over again .
Being stubborn doesn't help . I'm reluctant to call tech support because of the frustration of waiting for my call to be answered and and I don't really want to bother my friends about pc problems .

I know from past experience that many hours are waisted playing around on the internet but this time I want to turn this blog into something positive .

Not really about drywall

That customer from hell ,
HE'S BAAAAAACK
NOT SATISFIED YEEEEET .
Took some self control to return to job ,
keep my mouth closed , and do what he wanted .

This may not be the end of it because the finish coat of paint
is next and it's going to be a satin finish .

My enemies are a winter sun low in the sky streaming through a picture window , and a 500 watt incandescent lamp held high at night in the the hands of a stressed out home owner who really wants his money's worth .

Our ancestors lived in caves and recorded their experience on the walls using the cracks and fissures as a starting point for their art .
Now perfection is demanded in our dwelling places and I must create walls that are seamless and blemish free . It's just an illusion really and that's my job , to create the illusion of perfection , and unfortunately perfection is in the eye of the beholder .
